And humiliating is the punishment of those who reject Faith.*
2 Al-Baqarah Verse 161 (2:161:8) عَلَيْهِمْ عليهم ‘aleyhim on them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Those who reject Faith, and die rejecting,- on them is Allah.s curse, and the curse of angels, and of all mankind;
3 Al-Baqarah Verse 259 (2:259:8) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins(304) to its roofs. He said: "Oh! how shall Allah bring it (ever) to life, after (this) its death?" but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: "How long didst thou tarry (thus)?" He said: (Perhaps) a day or part of a day." He said: "Nay, thou hast tarried thus a hundred years; but look at thy food and thy drink; they show no signs of age; and look at thy donkey: And that We may make of thee a sign unto the people, Look further at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh(305)." When this was shown clearly to him, he said: "I know that Allah hath power over all things."*

Yusuf Ali (English) Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins(304) to its roofs. He said: "Oh! how shall Allah bring it (ever) to life, after (this) its death?" but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). 5 Ali 'Imran Verse 61 (3:61:24) عَلَى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge Hath come to thee, say: "Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!(400)"*
6 Ali 'Imran Verse 153 (3:153:13) بِغَمٍّ بغم bi-ġammin on distress غ م م
Yusuf Ali (English) Behold! ye were climbing up the high ground, without even casting a side glance at any one, and the Messenger in your rear was calling you back. There did Allah give you one distress after another by way of requital,(464) to teach you not to grieve for (the booty) that had escaped you and for (the ill) that had befallen you. For Allah is well aware of all that ye do.*
7 An-Nisa Verse 112 (4:112:7) يَرْمِ يرم yermi throws ر م ي
Yusuf Ali (English) But if any one earns a fault or a sin and throws it on to one that is innocent, He carries (on himself) (Both) a falsehood and a flagrant sin.
8 Al-An'am Verse 12 (6:12:10) عَلٰى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "To whom belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth?" Say: "To Allah. He hath inscribed for Himself (the rule of) Mercy.(844) That He will gather you together for the Day of Judgment, there is no doubt whatever. It is they who have lost their own souls, that will not believe.*
9 Al-An'am Verse 25 (6:25:6) عَلٰى على ‘alâ over عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Of them there are some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but We have thrown veils on their hearts, So they understand it not,(852-A) and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the Unbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the ancients."*
10 Al-An'am Verse 46 (6:46:9) عَلٰى على ‘alâ [on] عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "Think ye, if Allah took away your hearing and your sight, and sealed up(864) your hearts, who - a god other than Allah - could restore them to you?" See how We explain the signs by various (symbols); yet they turn aside.*
11 Al-An'am Verse 125 (6:125:25) عَلَى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Those whom Allah (in His plan) willeth to guide,- He openeth(947) their breast to Islam; those whom He willeth to leave straying,- He maketh their breast close and constricted, as if they had to climb up to the skies: thus doth Allah (heap) the penalty on those who refuse to believe.*
12 Al-A'raf Verse 16 (7:16:6) صِرَاطَكَ صراطك sirâtake (on) Your path ص ر ط
Yusuf Ali (English) He said: "Because thou hast thrown me out(1001) of the way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on thy straight way:*
13 Al-A'raf Verse 176 (7:176:0) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi [on] him عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires.(1150) His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue,(1151) or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.*
14 Al-Anfal Verse 12 (8:12:0) فَوْقَ فوق fevka above ف و ق
Yusuf Ali (English) Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them."(1189)*
15 At-Tawbah Verse 33 (9:33:0) عَلَى على ‘alâ over عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) It is He Who hath sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth, to prevail it(1290) over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it).*
16 Yusuf Verse 55 (12:55:3) عَلٰى على ‘alâ over عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) (Joseph) said: "Set me over the storehouses(1716) of the land: I will indeed guard them, as one that knows (their importance)."*
17 Yusuf Verse 100 (12:100:3) عَلَى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) And he raised his parents high on the throne (of dignity),(1779) and they fell down in prostration, (all) before him.(1779-A) He said: "O my father! this is the fulfilment of my vision of old! Allah hath made it come true! He was indeed good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you (all here)(1780) out of the desert, (even) after Satan had sown enmity between me and my brothers. Verily my Lord understandeth best the mysteries of all that He planneth to do, for verily He is full of knowledge and wisdom.*
18 An-Nahl Verse 88 (16:88:9) فَوْقَ فوق fevka over ف و ق
Yusuf Ali (English) Those who reject Allah and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah - for them will We add Penalty to Penalty; for that they used to spread mischief.
19 Al-Isra Verse 107 (17:107:17) لِلْاَذْقَانِ للاذقان lil-eżkâni on their faces ذ ق ن
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "Whether ye believe in it or not, it is true that those who were given(2318) knowledge beforehand, when it is recited to them, fall down on their faces in humble prostration,*
20 Al-Isra Verse 109 (17:109:2) لِلْاَذْقَانِ للاذقان lil-eżkâni on their faces ذ ق ن
Yusuf Ali (English) They fall down on their faces in tears, and it increases their (earnest) humility.(2320)*
21 Al-Kahf Verse 14 (18:14:2) عَلٰى على ‘alâ [on] عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) We gave strength to their hearts:(2343) Behold, they stood up(2344) and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and of the earth: never shall we call upon any god other than Him: if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity!*
22 Al-Kahf Verse 21 (18:21:20) عَلَيْهِمْ عليهم ‘aleyhim over them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Thus(2357) did We make their case known to the people, that they might know that the promise of Allah is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour of Judgment. Behold, they dispute among themselves(2358) as to their affair. (Some) said, "Construct a building over them": Their Lord knows best about them: those who prevailed over their affair said, "Let us surely build a place of worship over them."*
23 Al-Kahf Verse 21 (18:21:31) عَلَيْهِمْ عليهم ‘aleyhim over them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Thus(2357) did We make their case known to the people, that they might know that the promise of Allah is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour of Judgment. Behold, they dispute among themselves(2358) as to their affair. (Some) said, "Construct a building over them": Their Lord knows best about them: those who prevailed over their affair said, "Let us surely build a place of worship over them."*
24 Ta-Ha Verse 81 (20:81:14) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi on whom descends عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) (Saying): "Eat of the good(2602) things We have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should justly descend on you: and those on whom descends My Wrath do perish indeed!(2603)*
25 Al-Anbiya Verse 18 (21:18:4) عَلَى على ‘alâ against عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Nay, We hurl the Truth against falsehood, and it knocks out its brain, and behold, falsehood doth perish! Ah! woe be to you for the (false) things ye ascribe (to Us).(2678)*
26 Al-Hajj Verse 45 (22:45:9) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) How many populations have We destroyed, which were given to wrong- doing? They tumbled down(2823) on their roofs. And how many wells are lying idle and neglected,(2824) and castles lofty and well-built?*
27 Al-Hajj Verse 65 (22:65:19) عَلَى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Seest thou not that Allah has made subject to you (men) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail(2846) through the sea by His Command? He withholds the sky (rain)(2847) from failing on the earth except by His leave: for Allah is Most Kind and Most Merciful to man.*
28 An-Nur Verse 31 (24:31:17) عَلٰى على ‘alâ over عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard(2984) their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments(2985) except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband´s fathers, their sons, their husbands´ sons, their brothers or their brothers´ sons, or their sisters´ sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments.(2986) And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.(2987)*
29 An-Nur Verse 35 (24:35:34) عَلٰى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Allah is the Light(2996) of the heavens and the earth.(2997) The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass:(2998) the glass as it were a brilliant star:(2999) Lit from a blessed Tree,(3000) an Olive, neither of the east nor of the West,(3001) whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it:(3002) Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light:(3003) Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.*
30 An-Nur Verse 40 (24:40:16) فَوْقَ فوق fevka on ف و ق
Yusuf Ali (English) Or (the Unbelievers´ state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds:(3013) depths of darkness, one(3014) above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light!(3015)*
31 An-Nur Verse 43 (24:43:12) رُكَامًا ركاما rukâmen (into) a mass ر ك م
Yusuf Ali (English) Seest thou not that Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap? - then wilt thou see rain issue forth(3019) from their midst. And He sends down from the sky mountain masses (of clouds) wherein is hail: He strikes therewith whom He pleases and He turns it away from whom He pleases, the vivid flash of His lightning well-nigh blinds the sight.*
32 Al-Furqan Verse 8 (25:8:3) اِلَيْهِ اليه ileyhi to him إِلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) "Or (Why) has not a treasure been bestowed on him, or why has he (not) a garden for enjoyment?"(3061) The wicked say: "Ye follow none other than a man bewitched."(3062)*
33 Al-Furqan Verse 43 (25:43:8) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi over him عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him?(3097)*
34 Al-'Ankabut Verse 34 (29:34:3) عَلٰٓى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) "For we are going to bring down on the people of this township a Punishment(3456) from heaven, because they have been wickedly rebellious."*
35 Al-'Ankabut Verse 40 (29:40:7) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi on him عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Each one of them We seized for his crime: of them, against some We sent a violent tornado (with showers(3462) of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) Blast;(3463) some We caused the earth(3464) to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters):(3465) It was not Allah Who injured (or oppressed) them:" They injured (and oppressed) their own souls.*
36 Luqman Verse 14 (31:14:7) عَلٰى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain(3596) was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.*
37 Al-Ahzab Verse 19 (33:19:13) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi faints عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Covetous over you.(3689) Then when fear comes, thou wilt see them looking to thee, their eyes revolving, like (those of) one over whom hovers death: but when the fear is past, they will smite you with sharp tongues, covetous(3690) of goods. Such men have no faith, and so Allah has made their deeds(3691) of none effect: and that is easy for Allah.(3692)*
38 Al-Ahzab Verse 60 (33:60:12) لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَ لنغرينك le-nuġriyenneke We will let you overpower them غ ر و
Yusuf Ali (English) Truly, if the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who stir up sedition in the City,(3768) desist not, We shall certainly stir thee up against them: Then will they not be able to stay in it as thy neighbours for any length of time:*
39 Sad Verse 34 (38:34:5) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) And We did try(4188) Solomon: We placed on his throne a body(4189) (without life); but he did turn (to Us in true devotion):*
40 Ad-Dukhan Verse 48 (44:48:3) فَوْقَ فوق fevka over ف و ق
Yusuf Ali (English) "Then pour over his head the Penalty of Boiling Water,
41 Al-Jathiyah Verse 23 (45:23:15) عَلٰى على ‘alâ over عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Then seest thou such(4761) a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed(4762) his hearing and his heart (and understanding), and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition?*
42 Al-Fath Verse 29 (48:29:38) عَلٰى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other.(4913) Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure.(4914) On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces(4915) of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Tawrah;(4916) and their similitude in the Gospel is:(4917) like a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem, (filling) the sowers with wonder and delight. As a result,(4918) it fills the Unbelievers with rage at them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness, and a great Reward.*
43 Al-Hujurat Verse 2 (49:2:8) فَوْقَ فوق fevka above ف و ق
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! Raise not your voices(4920) above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk, as ye may speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds become(4921) vain and ye perceive not.*
44 An-Najm Verse 53 (53:53:1) وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ والمؤتفكة vel-mu/tefikete And the overturned cities أ ف ك
Yusuf Ali (English) And He destroyed the Overthrown Cities(5121) (of Sodom and Gomorrah).*
45 Al-Qamar Verse 19 (54:19:3) عَلَيْهِمْ عليهم ‘aleyhim upon them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) For We sent against them(5144) a furious wind, on a Day of violent Disaster,*
46 As-Saff Verse 7 (61:7:5) عَلَى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Who doth greater wrong than one who invents falsehood against Allah, even as he is being invited(5440) to Islam? And Allah guides not those who do wrong.*
