4 Al-Baqarah Verse 143 (2:143:18) عَلَيْهَٓا عليها ‘aleyhâ [on it] عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Thus(142), have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced(143), that ye might be witnesses(144) over the nations, and the Messenger a witness over yourselves; and We appointed the Qibla to which thou wast used, only to test those who followed the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels(145) (From the Faith). Indeed it was (A change) momentous, except to those guided by Allah. And never would Allah Make your faith of no effect(146). For Allah is to all people Most surely full of kindness, Most Merciful.*
5 Al-Baqarah Verse 143 (2:143:26) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Thus(142), have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced(143), that ye might be witnesses(144) over the nations, and the Messenger a witness over yourselves; and We appointed the Qibla to which thou wast used, only to test those who followed the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels(145) (From the Faith). Yusuf Ali (English) When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah hath revealed:" They say: "Nay! we shall follow the ways of our fathers." What! even though their fathers Were void of wisdom and guidance?
7 Al-Baqarah Verse 228 (2:228:33) عَلَيْهِنَّ عليهن ‘aleyhinne (is) on them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Divorced women shall wait concerning themselves for three monthly periods. Nor is it lawful for them to hide what Allah Hath created in their wombs, if they have faith in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation(254). And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them(255). And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.*
8 Al-Baqarah Verse 228 (2:228:36) عَلَيْهِنَّ عليهن ‘aleyhinne over them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Divorced women shall wait concerning themselves for three monthly periods. Nor is it lawful for them to hide what Allah Hath created in their wombs, if they have faith in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation(254). And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them(255). And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.*
9 Al-Baqarah Verse 233 (2:233:30) وَعَلَى وعلى ve’alâ And on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) The mothers shall give suck(266) to their offspring for two whole years, if the father desires to complete the term. But he shall bear the cost of their food and clothing(266-A) on equitable terms. No soul shall have a burden laid on it greater than it can bear. No mother shall be Treated unfairly on account of her child. Nor father on account of his child, an heir shall be chargeable in the same way, If they both decide on weaning, by mutual consent, and after due consultation, there is no blame on them. If ye decide on a foster-mother for your offspring, there is no blame on you, provided ye pay (the mother) what ye offered, on equitable terms. But fear Allah and know that Allah sees well what ye do.*
10 Al-Baqarah Verse 264 (2:264:23) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi upon it عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day(310). They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. And Allah guideth not those who reject faith.*
11 Al-Baqarah Verse 265 (2:265:13) بِرَبْوَةٍ بربوة bi-rabvetin on a height ر ب و
Yusuf Ali (English) And the likeness of those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile: heavy rain(311) falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of harvest, and if it receives not Heavy rain, light moisture sufficeth it. Allah seeth well whatever ye do.*
12 Al-Baqarah Verse 282 (2:282:27) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi on whom عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! When ye deal with each other, in transactions involving future obligations in a fixed period of time, reduce them to writing(329) Let a scribe write down faithfully as between the parties: let not the scribe refuse to write: as Allah(330) Has taught him, so let him write. Let him who incurs the liability dictate, but let him fear His Lord Allah, and not diminish aught of what he owes. If they party liable is mentally deficient, or weak, or unable Himself to dictate(331), Let his guardian dictate faithfully, and get two witnesses, out of your own men(332), and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her. The witnesses should not refuse when they are called on (For evidence). Disdain not to reduce to writing (your contract) for a future period, whether it be small or big: it is juster in the sight of Allah, More suitable as evidence, and more convenient to prevent doubts among yourselves but if it be a transaction hich ye carry out on the spot among yourselves, there is no blame on you if ye reduce it not to writing. But take witness whenever ye make a commercial contract; and let neither scribe nor witness suffer harm. If ye do (such harm), it would be wickedness in you. So fear Allah; For it is Allah that teaches you. And Allah is well acquainted with all things(333). If ye are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, a pledge with possession (may serve the purpose)(334). And if one of you deposits a thing on trust with another(335), let the trustee (faithfully) discharge his trust, and let him Fear his Lord conceal not evidence; for whoever conceals it, - his heart is tainted(336) with sin. And Allah knoweth all that ye do.*
13 Ali 'Imran Verse 97 (3:97:11) عَلَى على ‘alâ upon عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham(424); whoever enters it attains security(425); Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures.*
14 Ali 'Imran Verse 144 (3:144:15) عَلٰٓى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Muhammad is no more(460) than a messenger: many Were the messenger that passed away before him. If he died or were slain, will ye then Turn back on your heels? If any did turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah. but Allah (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve Him) with gratitude.*

But He chooses of His Messenger. (For the purpose) whom He pleases. So believe in Allah. And His messengers: And if ye believe and do right, ye have a reward without measure.*
17 An-Nisa Verse 34 (4:34:3) عَلَى على ‘alâ of عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Men are the protectors(545) and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband´s) absence what Allah would have them guard.(546) As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first),(547) (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly);(547-A) but if they return to obedience, seek not against them(548) Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).*
18 An-Nisa Verse 43 (4:43:25) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged,(562) until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (Except when travelling on the road), until after washing your whole body. If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water,(563) then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. For Allah doth blot out sins and forgive again and again.*
19 An-Nisa Verse 103 (4:103:8) وَعَلٰى وعلى ve ’alâ and (lying) on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) When ye pass(619) (Congregational) prayers, celebrate Allah.s praises, standing, sitting down, or lying down on your sides; but when ye are free from danger, set up Regular Prayers: For such prayers are enjoined on believers at stated times.*
20 Al-Ma'idah Verse 2 (5:2:40) عَلَى على ‘alâ in عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah,(686) nor of the Sacred Month,(687) nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the Sacred House,(688) seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the Sacred Precincts(689) and of pilgrim garb, ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part).(690) Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah. for Allah is strict in punishment.*

Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! 22 Al-Ma'idah Verse 6 (5:6:27) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! when(702) ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity,(703) bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth,(704) and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.*
23 Al-Ma'idah Verse 13 (5:13:20) عَلٰى على ‘alâ of عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them,(712) and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them- barring a few - ever bent on (new) deceits:(713) but forgive them, and overlook(714) (their misdeeds): for Allah loveth those who are kind.*
24 Al-Ma'idah Verse 68 (5:68:6) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "O People of the Book! ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord." It is the revelation that cometh to thee from thy Lord, that increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. But sorrow thou not over (these) people without Faith.(778)*
25 Al-Ma'idah Verse 104 (5:104:15) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi upon it عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) When it is said to them: "Come to what Allah hath revealed; come to the Messenger.: They say: "Enough for us(810) are the ways we found our fathers following." what! even though their fathers were void of knowledge and guidance?*
26 Al-An'am Verse 35 (6:35:23) عَلَى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) If their spurning is hard on thy mind, yet if thou wert able to seek a tunnel in the ground or a ladder to the skies and bring them a sign-(856) (what good?). If it were Allah.s will, He could gather them together unto true guidance: so be not thou amongst those who are swayed by ignorance (and impatience)!*
27 Al-An'am Verse 57 (6:57:3) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "For me, I (work) on a clear sign from my Lord, but ye reject Him. What ye(877) would see hastened, is not in my power. The command rests with none but Allah. He declares the truth, and He is the best of judges."*
28 Al-An'am Verse 71 (6:71:12) عَلٰٓى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Say:(895) "Shall we indeed call on others besides Allah,- things that can do us neither good nor harm,- and turn on our heels after receiving guidance from Allah. - like one whom the evil ones have made into a fool, wandering bewildered through the earth, his friends calling, come to us´, (vainly) guiding him to the path." Say: "(Allah)´s guidance is the (only) guidance, and we have been directed to submit ourselves to the Lord of the worlds;-*
29 Al-A'raf Verse 46 (7:46:3) وَعَلَى وعلى ve ’alâ and on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Between them shall be a veil, and on the heights(1025) will be men who would know every one by his marks: they will call out to the Companions of the Garden, "peace on you": they will not have entered, but they will have an assurance (thereof).*
30 Al-A'raf Verse 157 (7:157:0) عَلَيْهِمْۜ عليهم ‘aleyhim upon them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) "Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),-(1127) in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes(1128) that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,-(1129) it is they who will prosper."(1130)*
31 At-Tawbah Verse 60 (9:60:0) عَلَيْهَا عليها ‘aleyhâ them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allah. and for the wayfarer:(1320) (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.*
32 Yunus Verse 78 (10:78:0) عَلَيْهِ عليه ‘aleyhi on it عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) They said: "Hast thou come to us to turn us away from the ways we found our fathers following,- in order that thou and thy brother may have greatness in the land?(1463) But not we shall believe in you!"*

Yusuf Ali (English) He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days(1501) - and His Throne was over the Waters - (1502) that He might try you,(1503) which of you is best in conduct. But if thou wert to say to them, "Ye shall indeed be raised up after death", the Unbelievers would be sure to say,(1504) "This is nothing but obvious sorcery!"*
34 Yusuf Verse 84 (12:84:6) عَلٰى على ‘alâ over عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) And he turned away from them, and said: "How great is my grief for Joseph!" And his eyes became white(1758) with sorrow, and he fell into silent melancholy.*
35 Ar-Ra'd Verse 33 (13:33:4) عَلٰى على ‘alâ of عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Is then He who standeth over every soul (and knoweth) all that it doth, (like any others)? And yet they ascribe partners to Allah. Say: "But name them!(1851) is it that ye will inform Him of something he knoweth not on earth, or is it (just) a show of words?" Nay! to those who believe not, their pretence(1852) seems pleasing, but they are kept back (thereby) from the path. And those whom Allah leaves to stray, no one can guide.*
36 Al-Hijr Verse 42 (15:42:5) عَلَيْهِمْ عليهم ‘aleyhim over them عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) "For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee."
37 Al-Hijr Verse 47 (15:47:8) عَلٰى على ‘alâ on عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury:(1978) (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity).*
38 Al-Hijr Verse 76 (15:76:2) لَبِسَب۪يلٍ لبسبيل le-bisebîlin (is) on a road س ب ل
Yusuf Ali (English) And the (cities were) right on the highroad.(1998)*
39 An-Nahl Verse 47 (16:47:3) عَلٰى على ‘alâ with عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) Or that He may not call them to account by a process of slow wastage -(2073) for thy Lord is indeed full of kindness and mercy.*
40 An-Nahl Verse 61 (16:61:8) عَلَيْهَا عليها ‘aleyhâ upon it عَلَىٰ
Yusuf Ali (English) If Allah were to punish men for their wrong-doing, He would not leave, on the (earth), a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term: When their Term expires, they would not be able to delay (the punishment) for a single hour, just as they would not be able to anticipate it (for a single hour).(2087)*
