Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! when(702) ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity,(703) bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth,(704) and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.*
203 Al-Ma'idah Verse 12 (5:12:6) اِسْرَٓاء۪يلَۚ اسراءيل isrâîle (of) Israel إِسْرَائِيل
Yusuf Ali (English) Allah did aforetime take a covenant from the Children of Israel,(709) and we appointed twelve captains among them. And Allah said: "I am with you: if ye (but) establish regular prayers, practise regular charity, believe in my messengers, honour and assist them, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan,(710) verily I will wipe out from you your evils, and admit you to gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you, after this, resisteth faith, he hath truly wandered from the path or rectitude."(711)*
204 Al-Ma'idah Verse 15 (5:15:9) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran much ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) O people of the Book! There hath come to you our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book, and passing over much (that is now unnecessary). There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a perspicuous Book,-(716)*

Yusuf Ali (English) Wherewith Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety, and leadeth them out of darkness, by His will, unto the light,- guideth them to a path that is straight.
206 Al-Ma'idah Verse 17 (5:17:18) اَرَادَ اراد erâde He intends ر و د
Yusuf Ali (English) In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every - one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth(717) what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things."*
207 Al-Ma'idah Verse 31 (5:31:3) غُرَابًا غرابا ġurâben a crow غ ر ب
Yusuf Ali (English) Then Allah sent a raven, who scratched the ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his brother.(735) "Woe is me!" said he; "Was I not even able to be as this raven, and to hide the shame of my brother?" then he became full of regrets-(736)*
208 Al-Ma'idah Verse 31 (5:31:20) الْغُرَابِ الغراب l-ġurâbi [the] crow غ ر ب
Yusuf Ali (English) Then Allah sent a raven, who scratched the ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his brother.(735) "Woe is me!" said he; "Was I not even able to be as this raven, and to hide the shame of my brother?" then he became full of regrets-(736)*
209 Al-Ma'idah Verse 32 (5:32:7) اِسْرَٓاء۪يلَ اسراءيل isrâîle (of) Israel إِسْرَائِيل
Yusuf Ali (English) On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people:(737) and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.*
210 Al-Ma'idah Verse 32 (5:32:34) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran many ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people:(737) and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Yusuf Ali (English) To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it(759) in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way.(760) If Allah had so willed, He would have made you(761) a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah. it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;(762)*
212 Al-Ma'idah Verse 49 (5:49:30) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran many ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) And this (He commands): Judge thou between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, but beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching) which Allah hath sent down to thee. And if they turn away, be assured that for some of their crime it is Allah.s purpose to punish them. And truly most men are rebellious.
213 Al-Ma'idah Verse 55 (5:55:13) رَاكِعُونَ راكعون râki’ûn(e) (are) those who bow down ر ك ع
Yusuf Ali (English) Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers,- those who establish regular prayers and regular charity, and they bow down humbly (in worship).
214 Al-Ma'idah Verse 62 (5:62:2) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran many ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Many of them dost thou see, racing each other in sin and rancour, and their eating of things(771) forbidden. Evil indeed are the things that they do.*

But the revelation that cometh to thee from Allah increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion(773) and blasphemy. Amongst them we have placed enmity(774) and hatred till the Day of Judgment. Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief(775) on earth. And Allah loveth not those who do mischief.*

Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "O People of the Book! ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord." 221 Al-Ma'idah Verse 72 (5:72:15) اِسْرَٓاء۪يلَ اسراءيل isrâîle (of) Israel إِسْرَائِيل
Yusuf Ali (English) They do blaspheme who say: "(Allah) is Christ the son of Mary." But said Christ:(782) "O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever joins other gods with Allah,- Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help.*
222 Al-Ma'idah Verse 76 (5:76:10) ضَرًّا ضرا darran any harm ض ر ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "Will ye worship, besides Allah, something which hath no power either to harm or benefit you? But Allah,- He it is that heareth and knoweth all things."
223 Al-Ma'idah Verse 77 (5:77:20) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran many ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "O people of the Book! exceed not in your religion(785) the bounds (of what is proper), trespassing beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of people who went wrong in times gone by,- who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the even way.*
224 Al-Ma'idah Verse 78 (5:78:6) اِسْرَٓاء۪يلَ اسراءيل isrâîle (of) Israel إِسْرَائِيل
Yusuf Ali (English) Curses were pronounced on those among the Children of Israel who rejected Faith, by the tongue of David(786) and of Jesus the son of Mary(787): because they disobeyed and persisted in excesses.*
225 Al-Ma'idah Verse 80 (5:80:2) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran many ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Thou seest many of them turning in friendship to the Unbelievers. Evil indeed are (the works) which their souls have sent forward before them (with the result), that Allah.s wrath is on them, and in torment will they abide.
226 Al-Ma'idah Verse 81 (5:81:13) كَث۪يرًا كثيرا keśîran many ك ث ر
Yusuf Ali (English) If only they had believed in Allah, in the Messenger, and in what hath been revealed to him, never would they have taken them for friends and protectors, but most of them are rebellious wrong-doers.
227 Al-Ma'idah Verse 97 (5:97:5) الْحَرَامَ الحرام l-harâme the Sacred ح ر م
Yusuf Ali (English) Allah made the Ka´ba, the Sacred House, an asylum of security for men, as also the Sacred Months,(803) the animals for offerings, and the garlands that mark them:(804) That ye may know that Allah hath knowledge of what is in the heavens and on earth and that Allah is well acquainted with all things.(805)*

Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you,(807) may cause you trouble. But if ye ask about things when the Qur´an is being revealed, they will be made plain to you, Allah will forgive those: for Allah is Oft- forgiving, Most Forbearing.*
230 Al-Ma'idah Verse 106 (5:106:18) اٰخَرَانِ اخران âḣarâni two others أ خ ر
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! When death approaches any of you, (take) witnesses among yourselves when making bequests,- two just men of your own (brotherhood) or others from outside if ye are journeying through the earth, and the chance of death befalls you (thus). If ye doubt (their truth), detain them both after prayer, and let them both swear by Allah. "We wish not in this for any worldly gain, even though the (beneficiary) be our near relation: we shall hide not the evidence before Allah. if we do, then behold! the sin be upon us!(812)"*
231 Al-Ma'idah Verse 107 (5:107:7) فَاٰخَرَانِ فاخران fe-âḣarani then (let) two others أ خ ر
Yusuf Ali (English) But if it gets known that these two were guilty of the sin (of perjury), let two others stand forth in their places,- nearest in kin from among those who claim a lawful right:(813) let them swear by Allah. "We affirm that our witness is truer than that of those two, and that we have not trespassed (beyond the truth): if we did, behold! the wrong be upon us!"*
232 Al-Ma'idah Verse 110 (5:110:38) طَيْرًا طيرا tayran a bird ط ي ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour(815) to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee(816) with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity.(817) Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom,(818) the Law and the Gospel and behold! thou didst make(819) out of clay, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou didst breathe into it and it becometh a bird by My leave, and thou didst heal those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! thou didst bring forth the dead by My leave.(820) And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee(821) when thou didst show them the clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: ´This is nothing but evident magic.(822)´*
233 Al-Ma'idah Verse 110 (5:110:51) اِسْرَٓاء۪يلَ اسراءيل isrâîle (of) Israel إِسْرَائِيل
Yusuf Ali (English) Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour(815) to thee and to thy mother. Behold! Yusuf Ali (English) Said Jesus the son of Mary: "O Allah our Lord! Send us from heaven a table set (with viands),(826) that there may be for us - for the first and the last of us - a solemn festival and a sign from thee; and provide for our sustenance,(827) for thou art the best Sustainer (of our needs)."*
235 Al-An'am Verse 6 (6:6:19) مِدْرَارًاۖ مدرارا midrâran showering abundantly د ر ر
Yusuf Ali (English) See they not how many of those before them We did destroy?-(839) generations We had established on the earth, in strength such as We have not given to you - for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and gave (fertile) streams flowing beneath their (feet): yet for their sins We destroyed them, and raised in their wake fresh generations (to succeed them).*
236 Al-An'am Verse 19 (6:19:14) الْقُرْاٰنُ القران l-kur-ânu [the] Quran ق ر أ
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "What thing is most weighty in evidence?" Say: "(Allah) is witness between me and you; This Qur´an hath been revealed to me by inspiration, that I may warn you and all whom it reaches. Can ye possibly bear witness that besides Allah there is another Allah." Say: "Nay! I cannot bear witness!" Say: "But in truth He is the one Allah, and I truly am innocent of (your blasphemy of) joining others with Him."
237 Al-An'am Verse 25 (6:25:13) وَقْرًاۜ وقرا vakrâ(an) deafness و ق ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Of them there are some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but We have thrown veils on their hearts, So they understand it not,(852-A) and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the Unbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the ancients."*
238 Al-An'am Verse 35 (6:35:5) اِعْرَاضُهُمْ اعراضهم i’râduhum their aversion ع ر ض
Yusuf Ali (English) If their spurning is hard on thy mind, yet if thou wert able to seek a tunnel in the ground or a ladder to the skies and bring them a sign-(856) (what good?). If it were Allah.s will, He could gather them together unto true guidance: so be not thou amongst those who are swayed by ignorance (and impatience)!*
239 Al-An'am Verse 39 (6:39:16) صِرَاطٍ صراط sirâtin (the) way ص ر ط
Yusuf Ali (English) Those who reject our sings are deaf and dumb-(860) in the midst of darkness profound: whom Allah willeth, He leaveth to wander: whom He willeth, He placeth on the way that is straight.*
240 Al-An'am Verse 40 (6:40:2) اَرَاَيْتَكُمْ ارايتكم eraeytekum Have you seen ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "Think ye to yourselves, if there come upon you the wrath of Allah, or the Hour (that ye dread), would ye then call upon other than Allah.- (reply) if ye are truthful!

Yusuf Ali (English) Before thee We sent (messengers) to many nations, and We afflicted the nations with suffering and adversity, that they might learn humility.
242 Al-An'am Verse 46 (6:46:2) اَرَاَيْتُمْ ارايتم eraeytum Have you seen ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "Think ye, if Allah took away your hearing and your sight, and sealed up(864) your hearts, who - a god other than Allah - could restore them to you?" See how We explain the signs by various (symbols); yet they turn aside.*
243 Al-An'am Verse 47 (6:47:2) اَرَاَيْتَكُمْ ارايتكم eraeytekum Have you seen ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) Say: "Think ye, if the punishment of Allah comes to you, whether suddenly or openly,(865) will any be destroyed except those who do wrong?*
244 Al-An'am Verse 68 (6:68:2) رَاَيْتَ رايت raeyte you see ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) When thou seest men engaged in vain discourse about Our signs, turn away from them unless they turn to a different(891) theme. If Satan ever makes thee forget, then after recollection, sit not thou in the company of those who do wrong.*
245 Al-An'am Verse 70 (6:70:38) شَرَابٌ شراب şerâbun (will be) a drink ش ر ب
Yusuf Ali (English) Leave alone those who take their religion to be mere play and amusement,(893) and are deceived by the life of this world. But proclaim (to them) this (truth): that every soul delivers itself to ruin by its own acts:(894) it will find for itself no protector or intercessor except Allah. if it offered every ransom, (or reparation), none will be accepted: such is (the end of) those who deliver themselves to ruin by their own acts: they will have for drink (only) boiling water, and for punishment, one most grievous: for they persisted in rejecting Allah.*
246 Al-An'am Verse 71 (6:71:23) حَيْرَانَۖ حيران hayrâne confused ح ي ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Say:(895) "Shall we indeed call on others besides Allah,- things that can do us neither good nor harm,- and turn on our heels after receiving guidance from Allah. - like one whom the evil ones have made into a fool, wandering bewildered through the earth, his friends calling, come to us´, (vainly) guiding him to the path." Say: "(Allah)´s guidance is the (only) guidance, and we have been directed to submit ourselves to the Lord of the worlds;-*
247 Al-An'am Verse 76 (6:76:5) رَاٰ را raâ he saw ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) When the night covered him over, He saw a star: He said: "This is my Lord." But when it set, He said: "I love not those that set."(898)*
248 Al-An'am Verse 77 (6:77:2) رَاَ را raâ he saw ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) When he saw the moon rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord." But when the moon set, He said: "unless my Lord guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray."(899)*
249 Al-An'am Verse 78 (6:78:2) رَاَ را raâ he saw ر أ ي
Yusuf Ali (English) When he saw the sun rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord; this is the greatest (of all)." But when the sun set, he said: "O my people! I am indeed free from your (guilt) of giving partners to Allah.(900)*
