As to those who believed but came not into exile,(1240) ye owe no duty of protection to them until they come into exile; but if they seek your aid in religion, it is your duty to help them, except against a people with whom ye have a treaty of mutual alliance.(1241) And (remember) Allah seeth all that ye do.*
251 At-Tawbah Verse 5 (9:5:0) وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْ وجدتموهم vecedtumûhum you find them و ج د
Yusuf Ali (English) But when the forbidden months(1250) are past, then fight and slay(1251) the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent,(1252) and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.*
252 At-Tawbah Verse 6 (9:6:0) قَوْمٌ قوم kavmun (are) a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) If one amongst the Pagans(1253) ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah. and then escort him to where he can be secure.(1254) That is because they are men without knowledge.*

Yusuf Ali (English) The mosques of Allah shall be visited and maintained by such as believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity, and fear none (at all) except Allah.(1267) It is they who are expected to be on true guidance.(1268)*
254 At-Tawbah Verse 19 (9:19:0) الْقَوْمَ القوم l-kavme the people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) Do ye make the giving(1269) of drink to pilgrims, or the maintenance of the Sacred Mosque, equal to (the pious service of) those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and strive with might and main in the cause of Allah. They are not comparable in the sight of Allah. and Allah guides not those who do wrong.*

Yusuf Ali (English) Those who believe, and suffer exile and strive with might and main, in Allah's cause,(1270) with their goods and their persons, have the highest rank in the sight of Allah. they are the people who will achieve (salvation).*

Yusuf Ali (English) Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; the wealth that ye have gained; the commerce in which ye fear a decline: or the dwellings in which ye delight-(1272) are dearer to you than Allah, or His Messenger, or the striving in His cause;- then wait until Allah brings about(1273) His decision: and Allah guides not the rebellious.*
258 At-Tawbah Verse 37 (9:37:0) سُٓوءُ سوء sû-u (the) evil س و أ
Yusuf Ali (English) Verily the transposing(1297) (of a prohibited month) is an addition to Unbelief: the Unbelievers are led to wrong thereby: for they make it lawful one year, and forbidden another year, in order to adjust the number of months forbidden by Allah and make such forbidden ones lawful. The evil of their course seems pleasing(1298) to them. But Allah guideth not those who reject Faith.*
259 At-Tawbah Verse 39 (9:39:0) قَوْمًا قوما kavmen (with) a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) Unless ye go forth,(1301) He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place; but Him ye would not harm in the least. For Allah hath power over all things.*
260 At-Tawbah Verse 42 (9:42:0) وَسَفَرًا وسفرا ve seferan and a journey س ف ر
Yusuf Ali (English) If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them. They would indeed swear by Allah, "If we only could, we should certainly have come out with you": They would destroy their own souls;(1307) for Allah doth know that they are certainly lying.*
261 At-Tawbah Verse 47 (9:47:0) خَبَالًا خبالا ḣabâlen (in) confusion خ ب ل
Yusuf Ali (English) If they had come out with you, they would not have added to your (strength) but only (made for) disorder, hurrying to and fro in your midst(1310) and sowing sedition among you, and there would have been some among you who would have listened to them. But Allah knoweth well those who do wrong.*
262 At-Tawbah Verse 47 (9:47:0) وَلَا۬اَوْضَعُوا ولااوضعوا ve le-evda’û and would have been active و ض ع
Yusuf Ali (English) If they had come out with you, they would not have added to your (strength) but only (made for) disorder, hurrying to and fro in your midst(1310) and sowing sedition among you, and there would have been some among you who would have listened to them. Yusuf Ali (English) If good befalls thee, it grieves them; but if a misfortune befalls thee, they say, "We took indeed our precautions beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.
264 At-Tawbah Verse 56 (9:56:0) قَوْمٌ قوم kavmun (are) a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) They swear by Allah that they are indeed of you; but they are not of you: yet they are afraid (to appear in their true colours).
265 At-Tawbah Verse 62 (9:62:0) وَرَسُولُهُٓ ورسوله ve rasûluhu and His Messenger ر س ل
Yusuf Ali (English) To you they swear by Allah. In order to please you: But it is more fitting that they should please Allah and His Messenger, if they are Believers.
266 At-Tawbah Verse 67 (9:67:0) بِالْمُنْكَرِ بالمنكر bil-munkeri the wrong ن ك ر
Yusuf Ali (English) The Hypocrites, men and women, (have an understanding) with each other:(1324) They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close(1325) with their hands. They have forgotten Allah. so He(1326) hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse.*

Yusuf Ali (English) The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.
268 At-Tawbah Verse 77 (9:77:0) نِفَاقًا نفاقا nifâkan (with) hypocrisy ن ف ق
Yusuf Ali (English) So He hath put as a consequence(1332) hypocrisy into their hearts, (to last) till the Day, whereon they shall meet Him: because they broke their covenant with Allah, and because they lied (again and again).*
269 At-Tawbah Verse 83 (9:83:0) طَٓائِفَةٍ طائفة tâ-ifetin a group ط و ف
Yusuf Ali (English) If, then, Allah bring thee back to any of them, and they ask thy permission to come out (with thee), say: "Never shall ye come out with me, nor fight an enemy with me: for ye preferred to sit inactive on the first occasion: Then sit ye (now) with those who lag behind."

Yusuf Ali (English) Nor (is there blame) on those who came to thee to be provided with mounts(1344), and when thou saidst, "I can find no mounts for you," they turned back, their eyes streaming with tears of grief that they had no resources wherewith to provide the expenses.*

Yusuf Ali (English) They will swear unto you, that ye may be pleased with them but if ye are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with those who disobey.
272 At-Tawbah Verse 97 (9:97:0) وَنِفَاقًا ونفاقا ve nifâkan and hypocrisy ن ف ق
Yusuf Ali (English) The Arabs of the desert are the worst in Unbelief and hypocrisy, and most fitted to be in ignorance of the command which Allah hath sent down to His Messenger. But Allah is All-knowing, All-Wise.
273 At-Tawbah Verse 100 (9:100:0) الْفَوْزُ الفوز l-fevzu (is) the success ف و ز
Yusuf Ali (English) The vanguard (of Islam)(1348)- the first of those who forsook (their homes) and of those who gave them aid, and (also) those who follow them in (all) good deeds,- well- pleased is Allah with them, as are they with Him: for them hath He prepared gardens under which rivers flow(1349), to dwell therein for ever: that is the supreme felicity.*
274 At-Tawbah Verse 101 (9:101:0) النِّفَاقِ النفاق nnifâki the hypocrisy ن ف ق
Yusuf Ali (English) Certain of the desert Arabs round about you are hypocrites, as well as (desert Arabs) among the Medina folk(1350): they are obstinate in hypocrisy: thou knowest them not: We know them: twice shall We punish them(1351): and in addition shall they be sent to a grievous penalty.*
275 At-Tawbah Verse 109 (9:109:0) الْقَوْمَ القوم l-kavme the wrongdoing people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) Which then is best? - he that layeth his foundation on piety to Allah and His good pleasure? - or he that layeth his foundation on an undermined sandcliff( 1359) ready to crumble to pieces? and it doth crumble to pieces with him, into the fire of Hell. And Allah guideth not people that do wrong.*
276 At-Tawbah Verse 111 (9:111:0) وَيُقْتَلُونَ ويقتلون ve yuktelûn(e) and they are slain ق ت ل
Yusuf Ali (English) Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise):(1361) they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Qur´an:(1362) and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah. then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.*
277 At-Tawbah Verse 112 (9:112:0) الْمُنْكَرِ المنكر l-munkeri the wrong ن ك ر
Yusuf Ali (English) Those that turn (to Allah)(1363) in repentance; that serve Him, and praise Him; that wander in devotion to the cause of Allah,: that bow down and prostrate themselves in prayer; that enjoin good and forbid evil; and observe the limit set by Allah.- (These do rejoice). So proclaim the glad tidings to the Believers.*
278 At-Tawbah Verse 123 (9:123:0) يَلُونَكُمْ يلونكم yelûnekum (are) close to you و ل ي
Yusuf Ali (English) O ye who believe! fight the unbelievers who gird you about,(1374) and let them find firmness in you: and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.*
279 At-Tawbah Verse 127 (9:127:0) قَوْمٌ قوم kavmun (are) a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) Whenever there cometh down a Sura, they look at each other, (saying), "Doth anyone see you?" Then they turn aside: Allah hath turned their hearts(1378) (from the light); for they are a people that understand not.*
280 Yunus Verse 2 (10:2:0) صِدْقٍ صدق sidkin (will be) a respectable position ص د ق
Yusuf Ali (English) Is it a matter of wonderment to men that We have sent Our inspiration to a man from among themselves?-(1383) that he should warn mankind (of their danger), and give the good news to the Believers that they have before their Lord the lofty rank of Truth.(1384) (But) say the Unbelievers: "This is indeed an evident sorcerer!"*
281 Yunus Verse 5 (10:5:0) لِقَوْمٍ لقوم li-kavmin for a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory(1391) and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness.(1392) (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand.(1393)*
282 Yunus Verse 6 (10:6:0) لِقَوْمٍ لقوم li-kavmin for a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) Verily, in the alternation of the night and the day, and in all that Allah hath created, in the heavens and the earth, are signs for those who fear Him.(1394)*
283 Yunus Verse 11 (10:11:0) الشَّرَّ الشر şşerra the evil ش ر ر
Yusuf Ali (English) If Allah were to hasten for men the ill (they have earned) as they would fain hasten on the good,- then would their respite be settled at once.(1398) But We leave those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, in their trespasses, wandering in distraction to and fro.*
284 Yunus Verse 13 (10:13:0) الْقَوْمَ القوم l-kavme the people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) Generations before you We destroyed when they did wrong: their messengers came to them with clearsigns, but they would not believe! thus do We requite those who sin!
285 Yunus Verse 17 (10:17:0) يُفْلِحُ يفلح yuflihu will succeed ف ل ح
Yusuf Ali (English) Who doth more wrong than such as forge a lie against Allah, or deny His Signs? But never will prosper those who sin.
286 Yunus Verse 24 (10:24:0) لِقَوْمٍ لقوم li-kavmin for a people ق و م
Yusuf Ali (English) The likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies:(1412) by its mingling arises the produce of the earth- which provides food for men and animals: (It grows) till the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out (in beauty): the people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it: There reaches it Our command by night or by day, and We make it like a harvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished only the day before! thus do We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect.*
287 Yunus Verse 27 (10:27:0) السَّيِّـَٔاتِ السيـات sseyyiâti the evil deeds س و أ
Yusuf Ali (English) But those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil:(1416) ignominy will cover their (faces): No defender will they have from (the wrath of) Allah. Their faces will be covered, as it were, with pieces from the depth of the darkness(1417) of night: they are companions of the Fire: they will abide therein (for aye)!*

Yusuf Ali (English) It is He Who giveth life and who taketh it, and to Him shall ye all be brought back.

Yusuf Ali (English) For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present and in the Hereafter; no change can there be in the words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme felicity.

Yusuf Ali (English) He it is That hath made you the night that ye may rest therein, and the day to make things visible (to you).(1454) Verily in this are signs for those who listen (to His Message).*

Yusuf Ali (English) Then after them sent We Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh(1461) and his chiefs with Our Signs. But they were arrogant: they were a people in sin.*

Yusuf Ali (English) Said Moses: "Say ye (this) about the truth when it hath (actually) reached you? Is sorcery (like) this? But sorcerers will not prosper."(1462)*

Yusuf Ali (English) But none believed in Moses except some children of his People,(1466) because of the fear of Pharaoh and his chiefs, lest they should persecute them; and certainly Pharaoh was mighty on the earth and one who transgressed all bounds.*

Yusuf Ali (English) They said: "In Allah do we put out trust. Our Lord! make us not a trial for those(1467) who practise oppression;*

Yusuf Ali (English) "And deliver us by Thy Mercy from those who reject (Thee)."

Yusuf Ali (English) Why was there not a single township (among those We warned), which believed,- so its faith should have profited it,- except the People(1478) of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the penalty of ignominy in the life of the present, and permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.(1479)*
